JFCA, the Local Host, and ISC

Entrusted by the International Society for Criminology(ISC), the Japan Federation of Criminological Associations(JFCA) will proudly be hosting the forthcoming World Congress of the International Society for Criminology in 2011.

The JFCA comprises of criminological associations in Japan, which covers a wide range of disciplines from sociological criminology to victimology.
The JFCA has started its preparation for the Congress in close consultation with the ISC leadership.

About ISC

This World Congress is an official event of the International Society for Criminology (ISC).
It has an authority to make a final decision on major points of the academic program of the Congress, such as the themes, sub-topics and plenary speakers in consultation with the local arrangement committee.

Objectives

ISC's objective is to promote activities and research designed to further a better understanding of the crime phenomenon on an international scale. The Society also helps to promote the prevention of crime as well as improve the procedures used by the various criminal justice systems. These activities, therefore, focus both on scientific and practical issues.

Brief History

Founded in 1938, the ISC held its 1st World Congress in Rome. Its activities were shelved during the WWII, and re-started again in 1950 with the 2nd World Congress in Paris. It holds about 1,000 members in 82 countries and regions. It has a consultative status with the United Nations and the Council of Europe.

ISC Events Related to Japan

ISC World Congresses were held once in 5 years, however, the interval became 3 years after 2005. The last World Congress was held in Barcelona, Spain in 2008 when "Japan" was announced as the venue for the 2011 congress.
In addition to the World Congresses, International Courses in criminology have routinely been held under the auspices of the ISC, which are designed to foster the promotion of criminology and to encourage existing local initiatives.
